10 Reasons Why I Work Out at Home

Hey everybody! Well, I made it through the week…today is officially my Friday! Since this week got off to a pretty rough start, I decided a little reward was in order for this gal!

Tonight, my sister and I had a little sushi and fro-yo date. The perfect end to a long and tiring week!

Peanut butter, vanilla, and chocolate fro-yo topped with some kind of awesome crunchy granola, cookie dough bits, bananas, whipped topping, and chocolate sprinkles…because sprinkles make everything better! πŸ˜‰

So, during my workout this morning (heck yeah, two days in a row baby! Let it be known that I really, really hate getting up early to work out) my mind starting wandering to future blog posts…because let’s face it besides food and photography, that’s really all I think about!

I’ve had a couple of gym memberships in the past and I even had my very own personal trainer for a while. My problem is that I get really gung-ho about the membership at first and then, well…I lose my motivation. There’s just something about having to get up early in the morning, pack all your clothes for the day, shower in a 2×2 stall, and dress in a locker room that smells of old gym shoes. Or, if you decide to get your sweat on at the end of the day, you battle the crowds and almost always end up on a piece of equipment you hate eyeing the blonde on the elliptical and muttering obscenities under your breath while your glutes catch fire on the stair master. Oh wait, is that just me? My bad!

Anywho! I was thinking while sweating my arse off in my living room this morning how much more I like working out at home compared to going through the aforementioned stress of going to a gym.

Here’s a little list I came up with:

1. I get to listen to whatever music happens to be floating my boat at the time…Miley Cyrus, Taio Cruz, Beyonce, Three Days Grace, Skillet…yeah, I have a bit of an eclectic taste in music. These are actually all on the same playlist right now. Whateves…I do what I want!

2. Busting out into some “white girl” dance moves in the middle of my workout is completely acceptable, if not necessary. Bonus points for using the 5 pound dumbbell as a microphone.

3. Unlimited bathroom and water breaks. No line here yo!

4. On particular lazy morning workouts, pj bottoms and a sports bra is considered the perfect workout attire.

5. No need to feel self-conscious about how freakishly pale I am without makeup on, holding a 2 minute plank for 20 seconds, or the fact that I am working out in my pajamas.

6. No funky smelling equipment or puddles of “mystery liquid” in my workout space.

7. Speaking of funky smells, 3 words…normal bodily functions. Hello cauliflower! πŸ˜‰

8. My own personal workout cheerleader.

Don’t mind him, he’s just singing along to Beyonce!
“All my single ladies, all my single ladies…”

9. If at the end of a workout, I assume the chalk-man position in my living room floor, I don’t have to worry about that creepy looking guy (because all gyms have one of those) rushing over to me swearing he knows CPR!

10. The fact that I can be done with a workout and out of the shower in 15 minutes which gives me the rest of the morning to play with my food (aka fix breakfast) and catch up on my favorite blogs!

How do you feel about working out at the gym? Do you have a membership or do you sweat it out at the hizzouse?

  1. Totally a house person. Driving somewhere isn’t really practical for me especially since I have my own child and a step child to babysit. I mostly didn’t like how most of the people try to make conversation and talk to me while I’m doing my cardio. I’m not a good multitasker and I really don’t like chit chatting while I am pushing myself to my physical limit. It’s irritating. I think of all the time I save driving to and fro…fortunately the kiddos know that while I am doing my thing they don’t bother me unless they are bleeding, Mt. Rainier is erupting or something that is not in the fireplace is on fire. πŸ™‚

That fro-yo looks incredibly good right now. And your post has motivated me to get on my elliptical. Thank you for that!

    • Love the “if something that is not in the fireplace is on fire”! Haha! That’s great though that the kids know to give you your “me time.” Well trained, well trained! πŸ˜‰

  2. haha! Love number 3!

I can’t choose. If my house had a sauna…it would definitely be at home. BUTTT….it doesn’t! SO to the gym I march my little hiney!

P.s. I would LOVE to see more vlogs from you! Your so pretty and I love listening to you talk!

    • Aww, thank you sweetness! I was just thinking today that I might do another one soon! Be on the lookout!

I could do without the sauna, but I do wish I had a hot tub or a swimming pool! THAT would be awesome!

  3. I’m really lazy when I work out at home, but I wish I had a treadmill or an elliptical that I could use here. There is NOTHING worse than showering at a gym, either! Ew, I’m getting shivers just thinking about it 😦 Mark my words- I will never do it again!!

My hubby wants to get a membership to the Y so bad, but with two young kids, that is just impossible. Not only would we waste an hour just getting them ready to leave the house, but we can’t afford it with me being a stay at home mom. I am really wanting to start doing some workouts at home, I need to lose some baby weight. I’m just not sure what kinds of excersises to do that won’t be overdoing it. Keep in mind, I’ve been prego for basically the past two years. I also need something that will keep my interest. I get bored with just the basic “highscool” workouts. Any suggestions? I thought about zumba, because me and my little man LOVE to dance.

    • Heather,

First off, thank you so much for your comment! I can totally understand your reasons for refraining from gym membership! That does sound like quite a bit of work…and then once you get there, you’d probably be so frazzled your workout would suffer! I’m not sure of any dance dvd’s, but I did just buy Jackie Warner’s Timesaver Workout at Sam’s for like 9 bucks! It’s an awesome workout that gets your heart pumping! And it’s only 30 minutes long! Other than using that, I like to make up my own circuit workouts doing exercises that alternate the blood flow in your body from top to bottom (ie, squats/lunges followed by bicep curls/shoulder presses). I also try to incorporate some cardio moves to keep my heart pumping like jumping jacks and mountain climbers (which I love to hate!). Hope that helps some! Let me know if you have any questions!

  5. I hate showering and working out at a gym! That’s why I run outside and ride my bike trainer in my living room.

  6. YES YES totally agree! i MUCH prefer working out at home! but i wish i had a legit gym.. when im older.. no doubt I will invest in one!.. the probably i face is that i only have ONE dumbbell, which limits strength training by a LOT.. LAME

  7. Christie says:

I really enjoy reading your blog and miss spending time with you as well. Anyway, here is my take on working out and all that Jazz. I’m lazy to put it bluntly and need someone to help me stay focused and accountable. I use to work out at home but would find myself quitting when it got hard or when I was winded (which was often because I was so out of shape). However I completely understand the whole sports bra and jammies with some dumb bell singing…I can so see you doing that and it makes me laugh. Simply put I have zero motivation to work out at home because its way to easy to quit.
To be able to work out in a gym you first have to understand that most people who go to the gym are so vain that they are checking themselves out in the mirror and act as if they are the only one in the building, therefore they are not looking at you—except for that one weirdo that seems to be lost in the early 80s. Being a military spouse has its privileges, such as not having to have a gym membership and knowing that at 845 all the soldiers are going back to work so they gym is virtually empty..this is when I (and every other wife) drag myself out to hit the treadmill (only in the winter b/c when the weather is warm I run outside where anybody that owns a car can ridicule me from the comfort of their fast moving vehicle) and then go hide out in the sauna for 45 minutes or so. With every day that I work out I have to constantly bribe myself with something that I can do at the end of each workout. Having a friend or two to call your lazy butt everyday to make sure you are going to make it to the gym is great (Shonda was my go to person when I still lived there). You cant let down the only other person that cares if you show up or not, however, since we have been here at Knox the only go to person I have is the 20 lbs I have put on by NOT working out and making excuses why I cant go to the gym.
So what have I done…well in the last month I have started running again and I’m accountable only to myself and some other lady that I chat with in the sauna…she always reminds me that she was there on such and such date and she didn’t see me. I also have to keep in mind that I have two amazing children that need me to be around so I have to get heart smart and stay in shape for them not me. I also make a game out of my gym time (I have way to much time on my hands) I pick one person and tell myself I’m not going to stop running until that woman right there gets off that machine. Sometimes I’m like :look woman do you not see I’m dying here, go do something else. You know at some point we have all done something similar to that because a little friendly competition with the girl next door makes us push ourselves a little harder everyday. AH man I’m late for my treadmill and that lady in the sauna will tell me how late I really am when I walk in and shes walking out….or so I think until she sits back down and proceeds to tell me how her night went even though I have my ipod blaring in the ears….Happy working out Mrs. Heather
P.S Just FYI we have 3 more pair of shoes in our house that do not belong to me… Im still running with the same running shoes I had when we were there but with new insoles of course….only you would appreciate that tid bit of news

    • Christie! I miss you so much! And thank you, thank you for your comment! I see where you’re coming from. It’s not always easy to stay motivated and it really helps when you have someone to hold you accountable. I wish I could be your person, instead of your sauna “friend”! And I totally get the friendly competition thing. I used to do that all the time when I went to my old gym. Now, I find that I compete with myself. If I know that I did so many reps/minutes of a particular exercise last week, I KNOW I can do it again and I just push myself to meet if not beat what I did last time. It’s so true that in addition to thinking about our own bodies, we should keep in mind our loved ones. We want to be healthy to be able to enjoy life with them, but also by taking care of ourselves, we are setting an example for them as well! By the way, how are the kids? Did they adjust well to the move?

Haha! And Josh thinks he doesn’t have a shoe fetish! Puh-leeze!

  8. Donna says:

Lol, this post makes me want to work out in my pajamas!
Thanks for the great friday morning giggle πŸ™‚

  9. BrittFit says:

I love the gym because when I work out at home I am way less motivated. I think the gym is great because of the atmosphere haha

  10. Bonnie says:

I used to work out exclusively at home. I was actually kind of afraid of gyms because I was worried that people would look at me. I have had a gym membership for about four years now, and I will never, ever, ever, ever give it up — mainly because I’m a buff-frickin’, man-eating beast now. (As much as a 110-pound, 5’1″, 22-year old girl can be.) I like the energy, and it sparks my competitive spirit. I usually choose one buff person in the gym to compete against. They don’t know it. But I do. And I always win.

P.S. I have an iPod. Sometimes, I listen to old school Backstreet Boys. Don’t judge. And white girl dance moves? I’m the queen. I’ve been known to freak dance on my fiance in the middle of an intense gym session. People stare. I don’t care.

LOVE THIS!!! I have a membership but work out at home! I love the freedom of doing whatever/whenever I want and I love busting out the white girl booty shake in the middle of a workout!

  12. cailen says:

ps my sister and i LOVE our sushi dates too!

  13. Amanda says:

I love my gym membership! I’m stuck in the house a lot because I have a toddler and a baby. Going to the gym is my favorite time of day! πŸ™‚

  14. Alexandra says:

I like working out at the gym simply because they have free weights, weight machines, AND ellipticals. I also love going to yoga class, and then hangin’ in the sauna afterwards! On weekends, I definitely enjoy working out at home, though!

    • I am working on a little home gym now. I have some dumbbells and a stability ball. I had a resistance tube but I broke it with my superhuman strength…or it was just a cheap-o! πŸ˜‰ I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about getting an elliptical lately so that may happen in the near future! I would love to have something to do a little cardio with on those cold/rainy days!

  15. Hahahaha I love the normal bodily functions bit… working out always makes me have to fart, and doing it at home is much nicer! πŸ™‚

I quit my gym membership a while back to join my yoga studio instead… best move ever because now I work for my instructor managing her email accounts and get paid AND free classes in exchange… win/win!

  16. We have a gym membership right now, but I seem to be working out more at home now. πŸ™‚ It is so much more convenient! πŸ™‚

Your cheerleader is too cute! πŸ˜€

    xoxox,
    Kathleen

  17. Mrs. Fish says:

I have a gym membership and hate it. My gym is really tiny and I hate it. I’d much rather run outside all the time, but Ohio weather doesn’t always cooperate!
I had sushi on my Friday too!

  18. elise says:

i dont have a gym membership anymore. home gym is where its at yo. of key importance are the attire point you mentioned, as well as the chalk-person death pose following jillian’s beastly routines. holler!

  19. I want to start working out at home but I need a mat, a video, and some seeeerious motivation! halp!

  20. Amanda says:

I absolutely love my gym membership. I like the sense of community! It is fun to get to know people and see them transform! Zumba class is my very favorite because it’s all about crazy dance moves! FUN! :] Have you tried it??

    • Ha! I tried it once and didn’t even make it all the way through the class! Latin music + no dance rhythm + mixing up my left/right when looking at the instructor = one silly white girl looking like she’s about to have a seizure!
